Welcome back gardeners!!!

Congratulations on receiving a garden plot! All gardeners are asked to attend one of the two organizational meetings to learn about the garden program. The organizational meetings are on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, March 12 at 9:00 a.m. Please RSVP to (Alyssa.Tadelman@glenviewparks.org or (224)521-2203) to let me know which meeting you are planning to attend.

At this time, we still have 3 plots available. Interested gardeners can sign up at www.glenviewparks.org or in person at the Park Center. In addition, we often have gardeners forfeit their plots. We will be taking names for the wait list once all of the plots are full. People on the wait list have a good chance of receiving a plot due to cancellations.

Please check this blog for updated information on the preparation of the community garden and for the opening date.

Hello Gardeners!

I can't believe that I am already preparing for the 2016 garden season in the community garden! Last week, I had the best time ordering my veggie and flower seeds. I can't wait until they arrive! I am sure you are all excited about the community garden as well. Hey, the groundhog did not see his shadow, so we can all count on an early spring! If you are interested in signing up to be in the lottery for a garden plot, please see the important dates below.

Feb. 13-Glenview Park District brochure is delivered
Feb. 18-Resident Registration for a Community Garden Plot Begins(on-line or in person at the Park Center)
Feb. 29-Open Lottery for garden plots (Gardeners will be notified by e-mail if they obtain a plot or if they are put on the wait list)
March 8 at 7:00 p.m.and March 12 at 9:00 a.m.- Organizational Meetings-You MUST attend one of the 2 meetings if you obtain a garden plot.

Dear Gardeners,

Each winter, I can't wait to order my vegetable seeds for spring. The seeds are my hope for the coming spring. I am also excited about the 2016 Community Garden season. If you are interested in entering the lottery for a plot in 2016, here are some important dates:

February 13- Glenview Park District Spring Brochures will be delivered
February 18- Resident Registration will begin (you may sign up to enter the lottery at www.glenviewparks.org or in person at The Park Center)
February 29- The lottery will be spun
March 8 and 12- Mandatory Organizational Meetings- All gardeners must attend one of the meetings.

Hello Community Gardeners!

Happy Fall! The Wagner Farm Community Garden is now closed. If you are interested in obtaining a spot in the lottery for the 2016 season, information will be available online or in the spring Glenview Park District brochure. Hello Community Gardeners!

The 2015 gardening season is coming to a close. The Community Garden will be closing on Saturday, October 17. Please prepare your plot for winter by removing all sunflowers and non-organic material (ie-plant ties, tags, strings, tomato cages). Take home your tools and watering cans as well. You do not need to pull out all of your plants. They can be left in your plot. If you fail to follow these closing procedures, you will not be allowed in the lottery next year. All produce left in your plot after October 17 will be picked and taken to the Northfield Food Pantry.

I have really enjoyed meeting all of you and sharing gardening tips and stories. Thank you all for being so welcoming to me in my first year as the Community Garden Plot Coordinator. I look forward to seeing you all again in the spring for the 2016 gardening season.

FieldWatch is a nonprofit organization that is intended to help pesticide applicators and specialty crop growers communicate more effectively. The site registers certified organic gardens and their beehives. This information is provided to crop dusting (pesticide) applicators to let them know the location of organic gardens. They use this information to plan their routes accordingly. Our sign alerts them to keep pesticides away! The Wagner Farm Community Garden and our Wagner beehives are registered as organic sites through FieldWatch.

Q&A

Q: Are cocoa shells allowed as mulch in the community garden?

A: YES! Cocoa shell mulch (also called cocoa bean mulch) is great for gardens. These shells have a sweet smell and look very neat in your garden bed. When cocoa beans are roasted, their shells separate. Roasting the beans sterilizes the shells. Therefore, the shells are weed free and organic. If you are interested in using them in your plot, ask for them at your favorite garden center.

Negatives-When cocoa mulch gets too wet and does not have time to dry between waterings or rainfalls, it can attract pests. Also, in hot, humid weather, the cocoa shells can develop a harmless mold. You can use a mixture of 25% water and 75% vinegar as a spray to get rid of the mold.

*CAUTION- Do not use cocoa bean mulch at home if you have dogs. This sweet mulch can be toxic to dogs if eaten.

Biggest Gardening Mistakes:

1. Planting too soon-The weather forecast shows nighttime temperatures below 50º through next weekend. You are taking a risk if you plant your warm weather crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, basil, zucchini, etc.

2. Not hardening off your plants-Plants that have been grown in your house or in a greenhouse need to be “hardened off”. This means they need to gradually get use to the outdoor temperature, sun, and wind before being planted outside. Ask if your plants have been hardened off at your favorite garden store. Check online to see how to harden off your plants.

3. Improper Spacing-Your seedlings look so small and cute right now, but they will be huge! Read plant tags and seed packages for recommendations on plant spacing. Proper spacing will ensure better air circulation which leads to healthier plants and better production. Planting things too close together will make your plants more susceptible to disease. It will also make it difficult to harvest your veggies.

4. Not staking plants-It is important to stake your plants. This will promote proper air circulation and will help prevent disease. Staking is especially important because we have overhead sprinklers.

5. Not weeding-Weeds compete with your veggies for valuable nutrients and space. Some weeds even send out growth inhibitors that stunt the growth of your plants. You will get a weed warning in the Community Garden if you decide not to weed.
